Spider-Man 4… Without Tobey Maguire

Yup, you read it right… Spider-Man 4 without the trademark face.

Tobey Maguire is being replaced in Spider-Man 4  by Andrew Garfield (Air, I’m Here, Never Let Me Go).

Andrew Garfield

Before Andrew Garfield was named the new Spidey, he had some pretty tough competition going, with Josh Hutcherson, Logan Lerman, Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, Aaron Johnson, Anton Yelchin, Zac Effron and the Hollywood hotshot of the moment, Robert Pattinson, all long and short listed for the role. Now that, must have been one tough decision to make!

Spider-Man 4, currently untitled, but known as ‘Untitled Spider-Man Reboot’, is still in it’s early stages of production. In fact, it’s not scheduled for filming till December this year.

You thought that was a bit of a wait? Release date: July 3, 2012.

Yup. July 2012.  Spider-Man fans, we have a long wait ahead of us.

So, what’s the story that’s been stewing in the media for a while now?
To be honest, I was a bit confused myself, so I did my homework and look what I dug up…

When they say reboot, Sony really means reboot. We’re talking Peter Parker back at high school, a complete reboot of the franchise… new cast, meaning bye-bye Tobey Maguire (as mentioned before… 😦 ) and bye-bye Kirsten Dunst (I think she’s getting a little old to play the high school MJ but all the same, we’re sad to see her go).

Not only are the classic faces gone, but also the classic Spider-Man director Sam Raimi. The new film will be directed by Marc Webb and scripts written by James Vanderbilt, along with Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. There are assumptions that the reboot will be based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. Those are the rumours floating about, after creator of comics Brian Michael Bendis met with the movie crew.

Sam Raimi

And what brought this reboot on? Rumour has it that Raimi withdrew after claiming he wouldn’t be able to make the movie’s 2011 release date and maintain the high creative and quality standard expected of any Spider-Man film.

Fair enough, I reckon.

“Working on the ‘Spider-Man’ movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

Sony has also confirmed that the Spidey reboot will be in 3D, so that’s something to look forward to as well.

I’ve summed up what I know and if you want to enlighten me with any more goss on this issue, please go ahead, I’d love to hear. 🙂 After all, we’re huge Spidey fans here at Ebony Ink!
