Spider-Man 4… Without Tobey Maguire

Yup, you read it right… Spider-Man 4 without the trademark face.

Tobey Maguire is being replaced in Spider-Man 4  by Andrew Garfield (Air, I’m Here, Never Let Me Go).

Andrew Garfield

Before Andrew Garfield was named the new Spidey, he had some pretty tough competition going, with Josh Hutcherson, Logan Lerman, Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, Aaron Johnson, Anton Yelchin, Zac Effron and the Hollywood hotshot of the moment, Robert Pattinson, all long and short listed for the role. Now that, must have been one tough decision to make!

Spider-Man 4, currently untitled, but known as ‘Untitled Spider-Man Reboot’, is still in it’s early stages of production. In fact, it’s not scheduled for filming till December this year.

You thought that was a bit of a wait? Release date: July 3, 2012.

Yup. July 2012.  Spider-Man fans, we have a long wait ahead of us.

So, what’s the story that’s been stewing in the media for a while now?
To be honest, I was a bit confused myself, so I did my homework and look what I dug up…

When they say reboot, Sony really means reboot. We’re talking Peter Parker back at high school, a complete reboot of the franchise… new cast, meaning bye-bye Tobey Maguire (as mentioned before… 😦 ) and bye-bye Kirsten Dunst (I think she’s getting a little old to play the high school MJ but all the same, we’re sad to see her go).

Not only are the classic faces gone, but also the classic Spider-Man director Sam Raimi. The new film will be directed by Marc Webb and scripts written by James Vanderbilt, along with Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. There are assumptions that the reboot will be based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. Those are the rumours floating about, after creator of comics Brian Michael Bendis met with the movie crew.

Sam Raimi

And what brought this reboot on? Rumour has it that Raimi withdrew after claiming he wouldn’t be able to make the movie’s 2011 release date and maintain the high creative and quality standard expected of any Spider-Man film.

Fair enough, I reckon.

“Working on the ‘Spider-Man’ movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

Sony has also confirmed that the Spidey reboot will be in 3D, so that’s something to look forward to as well.

I’ve summed up what I know and if you want to enlighten me with any more goss on this issue, please go ahead, I’d love to hear. 🙂 After all, we’re huge Spidey fans here at Ebony Ink!

Celebrities vs Heroism

These two things (separately) have been a topic of great interest for me for quite a while. The media (I have a growing interest in journalism) and heroes (I have a fascination and admiration of heroes- of all kinds, be it Spiderman or the firefighter or an ordinary person carrying out an extraordinary act for the sake of humanity).

Recently, I had to do an essay about “Celebrities are not heroes”, and it got me thinking…

What is a hero?

But the more you think about it, the more the definition of the word “hero” changes. It finally came down to “an ordinary person carrying out an extraordinary, courageous act for the sake of humanity, with the single, selfless motive of doing the right thing to help someone else”.

So… then I thought, I need a second opinion on this. LOTS of second opinions…

What’s your definition of a hero? Who is your hero? Do you think celebs are heroes?

Post below and let us know! Anything that has anything to do with heroism, celebrities, media… anything at all.

🙂

Long Shot Kelly Clarkson

Nice song… sounds very Paramore especially the beginning. This is not the official music video (as you might work out by the title) it’s a Vampire Diaries video.
Credit to mayflowersoapqueen for the video. Song by Kelly Clarkson. I also like Katy Perry’s take on this.
Lyrics at the bottom.

Lyrics:
I felt it, the wire touched my neck
And then someone pulled it tighter
I never saw it coming, I started to black out
And then someone said good morning
I took it as a warning
I should have seen it coming
So now I’ll take a chance on
This thing we may have started
Intentional or not, I don’t think we saw it coming
It’s all adding up to something
That asks for some involvement
That ask for our commitment
I think I see it coming
If we step out of that limb

My heart beat beats me senselessly
Why’s everything got to be so intense with me
I’m trying to handle all this unpredictability
In all probability

It’s a long shot, but I say why not
If I say forget it, I know that I’ll regret it
It’s a long shot just to beat these odds
The chance is we won’t make it
But I know if I don’t take it, there’s no chance
‘Cause you’re the best I got
So take a long shot

I realize that there is all this starting
Things we’re both scared about
That we’ll never see them coming
Throw caution to the wind
And we’ll see which way it’s blowing
And to this pulling on
We’ll never see it coming
Until it’s much to close to stop

My heart beat beats me senselessly
Why’s everything got to be so intense with me
I’m trying to handle all this unpredictability
In all probability

It’s a long shot, but I say why not
If I say forget it, I know that I’ll regret it
It’s a long shot just to beat these odds
The chance is we won’t make it
But I know if I don’t take it, there’s no chance
‘Cause you’re the best I got
So take a long shot

Oh I waited for fact to come of fiction
And you fit my description
I never saw you coming
But we’ll make it

It’s a long shot, but I say why not
If I say forget it, I know that I’ll regret it
It’s a long shot just to beat these odds
The chance is we won’t make it
But I know if I don’t take it, there’s no chance
‘Cause you’re the best I got
So take a long shot

There’s no chance, there’s no chance
‘Cause you’re the best I got
It’s a long shot but I say why not
If I say forget it I know that I’ll regret it
It’s a long shot just to beat these odds
The chance is we won’t make it
But I know if I don’t take it
It’s a long shot but I say why not
Oh you never saw me coming

Apple’s new creation: the iPad

I’m in love.

I am in LOVE with the iPad.

Like Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Product Marketing put it “It’s a truly incredible, breakthrough product.”

The product fits you. It’s like it’s custom made for you. The iPad is about YOU not about the iPad.

It’s amazing. It’s simply amazing.

Features?
There’s plenty… but the best:

  • 10 hours of battery life.
  • Super fast net-surfing.
  • Affordable price- starts at USD$499 .
  • It’s super fast.
  • Thin and light weight, 1.5 pounds, o.5 inch thin.
  • Compact size- 9.7 inches diagonally, making it slightly smaller than a magazine… WOW!!
  • iBooks.
  • The quality of the videos is greaaaat.
  • Runs almost 140,000 apps from the App Store.
  • Maps
  • Word on iPad- just brilliant.
  • It’s Accessibility feature- the screen reader making it easier to use for people who are vision or hearing impaired or have a physical or learning disability.

BUT for me the best part is how interactive it is. You’re in control of everything, it’s all a touch away, you can hold it any way you like, it’s gonna reposition itself so it’s convenient for you. It’s almost too good to be true.

And there are heaps more apps and features, including the normal ones you’d find on a iPod Touch/iPhone.

Except…

There are a couple of down sides- the new iPad doesn’t have a camera or USB ports. I think a USB port was necessary, if not a camera. But honestly, I’m still planning on getting one to replace my laptop. And I totally want that cover to go with it. Plus, I love how you can use the wireless keyboard to work with the iPad.

They’ve marketed it really well though. Check out this video… the spirit of the creators of this revolutionary new product is contagious.

Harry Potter Craze

Suddenly, out of the blues, I had this huge inspiration while reading Harry Potter of doing a post on one of my favourite books of all time, Harry Potter. After the 7th book was released, this great phenomena’s success had sort of sunk, not because the book’s lost it’s amazing-ness but because there’s been other huge stuff happening. But we, great fans of HP, have kept track and know that the 7th movie is going to be released in the end of this year. The trailer’s already been released and although i actually prefer reading the books than watching the movies (i’m just not the type to ever enjoy movies as much as reading the books, i have to admit, no matter how geeky it sounds), i cannot wait for the seventh movie to be released. The only part of the 7th book i don’t look forward to is the death of Fred Weasley. Who wants to see that bit, anyway? I reckon it’s as sad as seeing Lupin and Tonks being killed just after having their son…

Anyway, sordid bits aside, i am as always so enthusiastic about HP and so i decided to post this up. After HP 7 you must have been left behind with a huge need to find out what happens to the characters after the book. The epilogue only helped a little. It’s understandable, JKR couldn’t put up everything that happens after the book in a two or three paged epilogue. Now, I have the solution. Maybe you already know, maybe you don’t…either way i’ve found the perfect website where almost everything about anything that involves HP can be found. The website’s awesome and when i feel down or just even bored, I always go to this website and read everything about the characters and all that is available. Yes, i sound like i have no life. Then again, who really has a glamarous life at the age of 15. Anyway, this website is called The Harry Potter Lexicon and it even holds several interviews done by JKR. They are really interesting, specially the ones that she did after the 7th book was released. Since the story is out and she doesn’t have to hold back majority of the information, the interviews are more exciting. This is the link to the website, one click and you’re off… http://www.hp-lexicon.org/index-2.html

The next website is a whole lot more popular i think. This website also gives you the latest events happening in the HP scene. I haven’t explored this site that much but i suggest hard core fans out there check this out as it gives valuable information. Here’s the link… http://www.mugglenet.com/

HPEF announces exclusive event inside Wizarding World theme park for Infinitus 2010 attendees Our friends at HPEF have just announced that their upcoming Infinitus 2010 Harry Potter conference, to be held July 15th – 18th at the Universal Studios Orlando Resort, will include a special event inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park, exclusively for Infinitus attendees!

More details concerning events within the park will be coming soon. MuggleCast will also be hosting a podcast at Infinitus and will participate in various activities throughout the entire conference. To learn more information and to register for the event, click here! If you do register, be sure to put “MuggleCast” in the referral box so they know who sent you!

This is an example of what you would find in the website. Sounds interesting right? You should definitely visit this website.

Another website is the Leaky Cauldron. I’ve heard of it but never really got around to exploring it but here’s the link http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/ They’ve actually put up photos of the sets they’ve used in the 7th movie. They’ve obviously been keeping to date…

Photos from Swinley Forest Filming of Deathly Hallows Online

As readers will recall, filming for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is gearing up to take place in the Swinley Forest area of Berkshire, England. A few new photos from the site are now online care of Oclumencia, and can be viewed via this link. What appears to be a stonework structure leading into the forest alongside large plywood panel backdrops has been constructed in the…

That’s just a snippet from the latest article they have on. You should visit the Leaky Cauldron for more information, on that article and HP.

Something else I found is the HP 7’s trailer. Apparently it was in the 6th DVD but I never found it on my copy. Hmm…I shall try to find it when I have some time to spare. Anyway here’s the trailer…

Hope you enjoyed the tid bits on HP.

Remember to check out the rest of the blog including our stories on our Stories and Beyond Page (here’s the link: https://ebonyink.wordpress.com/short-stories/ ). I can’t say it’s as good as HP but I hope you guys like our stories as well. We haven’t updated much but we will get on to that ASAP!

2012

2012 is a movie, released on November 12th (although the date is varied in various countries), and is based on a famous belief that the world’s going to end. I have a friend who’s already freaking out because of this movie and the belief that surrounds it. Personally i think this is just the media’s way of scaring us in to saving the planet from global warming and stuff like that. Anyway, i was curious and so i went on google and searched for 2012. As expected Wikipedia gave me a whole lot of stuff on this common belief. Along with the info, there was this curious timeline of “scheduled” ( they actually used that word) events that could occur before the world ends (according to them, anyway). Below you’ll find this list of events…

January

January 13–22 – The first Winter Youth Olympics will be held in Innsbruck, Austria.

January 31 – 433 Eros, the second-largest Near Earth Object on record (size 13×13×33 km) will pass Earth at 0.1790 astronomical units (26,778,019 km; 16,639,090 mi). NASA studied Eros with the NEAR Shoemaker probe launched on February 17, 1996.[3]

February

February 6 – Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II marking the 60th anniversary of her accession to the Thrones of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia & New Zealand (as well as the 60th anniversary of her becoming Head of the Commonwealth).

March

March 22 – Unless the European Council votes to extend current copyright law, The Beatles’ debut album, Please Please Me, will fall out of copyright.[4]

April

April 17 – The United States will cede wartime control of the military of the Republic of Korea after 50 years and dissolve the Combined Forces Command. Two distinct military commands (South Korea and the United States) will operate in Korea during wartime, rather than one unified command under the Combined Forces Command.[citation needed]

May

May 20 – Annular solar eclipse. Path of annularity runs through the Pacific Ocean from northern China to California.

June

June 6 – The second and last solar transit of Venus of the century. The next pair is predicted to occur in 2117 and 2125.

June 9 – July 1 – The UEFA Euro 2012 will be played in Poland and Ukraine.

June 18 – June 23 – Turing Centenary Conference at the University of Cambridge, in honor of the mathematician, computer scientist, and cryptographer Alan Turing, the last day of the conference being the hundredth anniversary of his birth. [1]

July

July 18–21 – The 2012 World Rowing Championships will be held at Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

July 27 – Opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics begins in London at 7:30 pm UTC, 8:30pm BST.[5]

August

August 12 – Closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, a Sunday.

August 29 – Start of the 2012 Summer Paralympics.

November

November 13 – Total solar eclipse (visible in northern Australia and the South Pacific).

November 28 – Penumbral lunar eclipse.

December

December 3 – Jupiter in opposition.

December 17 – Members of the Electoral College meet in each U.S. state.

December 21 – 11:11 UTC. Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.[6]

December 21 – The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization among others, completes a “great cycle” of thirteen b’ak’tuns (periods of 144,000 days each) since the mythical creation date of the calendar’s current era.[7] On this day the Long Count date at creation—written 13.0.0.0.0 in modern notation, equivalent to August 11, 3114 BC in the proleptic Gregorian calendar—is repeated for the first time in a span of a little over 5,125 solar years.[8] The completion of this cycle and the repetition of the previous Creation’s Long Count ending date have been central to the 2012 phenomenon. Academic researchers have not concluded that the ancient Maya themselves attached similar significance to this point in time.[9]

December 23 – An alternative date for the completion of the thirteenth B’ak’tun in the Long Count calendar, calculated using another version of the GMT correlation[10] which is supported by a few Mayanist researchers.[11]

December 31 – The Kyoto Protocol will expire.

As for the movie…i won’t ruin the plot for you. You should check it out though. Here’s the trailer below for anyone who wants a little peek before facing the real thing…

The movie looks good, but again i don’t think i believe that this will really happen. Actually i don’t know if this will actually happen. I mean, we can’t predict the future, can we? And believing so hard on theories and scaring ourselves is not going to help so i really can’t bring myself to get scared about this. But that’s my opinion. We, at Ebony Ink, want to know your opinion on this movie and the theory it’s based on. So leave us a comment and enjoy the movie (if your going to watch it).

We’re giving Ebony Ink a Makeover (finally)

Much loved Sponge turning to scum?

Theatrical poster of The SpongeBob SquarePants...

Image via Wikipedia

I love Spongebob. I really do. Who can’t love a neurotic, immature sponge who lives in a pineapple and is best friends with a brainless starfish? (Well…. my Mum HATES him…) I used to love watching the senseless episodes, lazing about after school, until recently, I have noticed a change…
Has the rating changed from G to PG? The witty humour from the old episodes has been replaced by matter that is a bit too mature for the majority of the audience that are fans of the show (and i’m talking Primary kids here- five to about ten years of age)…
I was flicking through the channels the other day, looking for something to watch so I didn’t have to do my homework (well, that always has been my favourite form of procrastinating) and I just caught the end of a SB episode, where Spongebob, Patrick and Mr. Krabs were going on a panty raid or something similarly sleazy. It wasn’t so much what was being said or done was but how it was being said and done. I found it kind of disturbing… especially when it turned out to be Mr. Krabs’ mother’s underwear drawer they were messing around with.  (I asked someone at school the next day [yes we still talk about cartoons, and no we are not too old to be discussing cartoons in math class] and the episode had been about Mr. Krabs feeling like he was old so he went for a day out with Spongebob and Pat. I later found out [thank you Google!] the episode’s called Mid-Life Crustacean, so check it out if you’re curious). This was only one of those examples.

I mean, after some more research into this (what would I do without Google?) I found that I am not the only person who has noticed this, change. Or have I  just started to notice it? Has it seriously always been like this? I read up a grandparent’s concern on the kind of behaviour that is being  conveyed through the show, and how their granddaughter said something that they didn’t like and they had heard it on a Spongebob episode.

This is a much debated opinion but I think it depends on the child, really, whether they can differentiate between real life and what they see behind the box or not. And here I’m referring to kids around the age of 5-6. This may sound ridiculous and just slightly off topic but seriously, kids know a lot more than what they show, so don’t be fooled by the innocence you see in their eyes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying kids aren’t innocent, (with a 3-year-old brother of my own, I know they are)but their ability to understand and know things should not be underestimated.

Although, as surprised as I was by this ‘change’ and wasn’t totally impressed by it, I have to make a point here; kids perceive cartoons differently from adults. You’d think they would catch on but they don’t or you’d think they noticed but they didn’t… And yes, watch carefully and you’ll notice that almost ALL cartoons have some sort of adult matter cleverly woven into them, just to amuse any parents that may be watching the show with their kids. It’s something I’ve noticed myself. So taking this point, maybe the hidden humour is getting where it should but getting the wrong reaction. Just something to ponder over; maybe what you’re seeing is not meant for the kids but you.

But there is one thing you can’t really deny here and that is that they will hear much worse out on the streets or on a trip to the mall than they will on Spongebob. The best you can do is teach them wrong from right. Talk to them about what’s acceptable and what is not.

I guess it’s also up to parents to censor the shows their kids watch. You’re the best judge here… Innocent fun or not quite so?
